With schools shutdown, international travel restrictions, ski mountains closing down, and everybody working remote if possible, it’s time to find other activities away from society to keep busy. Sure I could hold up indoors and watch Netflix and play video games for weeks. But that sounds boring! Thankfully I live in a place without winter so the great outdoors are plenty fun still.
It’s been raining on and off all week so I was worried about actually finding some clear weather to get out for a ride. While I could ride through some rain, it’s certainly less pleasant to do so. With that rain though certainly came plenty of puddles and lots of mud!
I’m quite the novice when it comes to biking and on a simple bike, so I stuck to fire roads with mild grades. This made for a decent 12 mile ride over the two hours with just about 800 feet of elevation gain in total. So the last 6 miles were very nice going downhill pretty much the whole way. I ended up rather muddy and wet by the end of the ride since it was very fun to rip through puddles.
This ride starts and ends at the ocean so the misty winter weather added a nice aesthetic to the day. Great ride and hopefully with the sun coming out tomorrow, I can get in another ride in a different spot. It’s still raining tonight so at least the mud will get washed off the bike by morning!

Looks like an excellent plan for the weekend.
You do know Winter doesn’t kill cycling or outdoors activities don’t you? Some might even ride more due to the lack of awful bugs, humidity, and stifling heat.

That looks beautiful!
I had the same thought - take this as an opportunity to get the hell out for a bit. I’m work from home for the next 2 weeks so hopefully I can get some things around the house done too.

I'm aware lol. It's more a jab about how prime riding season is winter here in malibu anyways. Since it doesn't snow nor get colder than 50 usually. I get to complain about colder winter because it's 55 and raining.

Nope, Malibu near sycamore Canyon. A long 5 minute drive from home!

I see all this every day and really need to remember to appreciate it more. I know I won't get to live here forever so I need to take it in while I can.

My wife and I were discussing last night, how if we’re “stuck at home” for 2 weeks with our kids, we’d spend most of it outside if possible. We’ve got 12 acres of our own to explore, with two streams. Then trails that connect up to a local mountain which is a nice ~40 minute climb. It’s still snowy/icy, so no biking up there yet, but we could ride bikes around our neighborhood. We are very lucky for that to be our “stuck at home” scenario.

Malibu, that does sound rough. Surprised there is public land to ride on ;)

California is pretty hard core about public land actually. It's a nice treat to have so much area that is illegal to be made into private land. It's state law that all beaches are public, much to the chagrin of some rich people on beachfront property.

Well aware of the landmark legal cases per beach use. Just surprised there is public land in Malibu for riding on. Anyways, have fun while it’s cool out.

Yeah it helps that I'm in the Ventura County end of Malibu so it's much more remote than the LA side. A few parks around here with good trails. And exactly, this is the best possible weather before it gets all hot down here. Thankfully in summer I can still get some good morning runs and plan some trips higher up in the sierras.
